Drop everything and go see Right Brain Productions’ “The Cotton Patch Gospel”. The show is lively and fun and will get your toes tapping and your laughs coming nonstop.
First produced in New York in 1981, Cotton Patch Gospel is a reverential retelling of the Gospel of Matthew and John set in the contemporary South, accompanied by bluegrass music. Since its premiere, this powerful full-length musical has been performed throughout the United States and beyond, always receiving rave review by the theater critics and religious writers alike.
The Messenger called it, “a rollicking, and foot-stomping, hand-clapping musical.” The Episcopalian described is as “powerful drama and a joyous celebration.” The American Baptist Magazine concluded simply that Cotton Patch Gospel “is the Gospel.” While The New York Times called it “an exuberant country western hoedown.”
To give you some idea of the evening’s stickly satiric flavor, when Jesus is born to “God and a Georgia girl,” three angels arrived bearing chili cheese-dogs and Mary begins to keep a baby book. The adult Jesus tours the Bible belt like a soul-saving preacher, falling in with a group of cronies named, Jim, Jack, Rock and poor Jud. Iscariot. Climbing on top of a table, the actor pretends to walk on water with cry of “It’s me. Jesus. Look, no skis,” and feeds 5,000 people with five boxes of Nabisco crackers and two cans of sardines.
Based on a book by Clarence Jordan, the musical stage version was developed by Tom Key and Russell Treyz who worked with the famed Harry Chapin who wrote the music and lyrics. Cotton Patch was Chapin’s final, and perhaps, best work.
Cotton Patch Gospel will make its second Mount Vernon run, when Right Brain Productions presents this award-winning musical in the Memorial Theater, January 15 – 17. It is a family oriented show that everyone will enjoy. Ticket reservations may be made by calling Joseph or Marty Bell at 393-BELL (2355).
